How to pack a 50 kg consignment for intercity transit

A 50 kg consignment is the classic part-load shipment — too heavy for courier, travelling in a shared truck where other people's goods sit on, under, and around yours. Packing is not about being fancy; it is about surviving stacking, vibration, and two or three rounds of loading and unloading.

1. Choose the right outer box

• Use a double-wall (5-ply) or triple-wall (7-ply) corrugated carton — single-wall boxes crush under stacking load.
• Size it so the goods fit snugly with 5–8 cm of cushioning on all sides. Oversized boxes collapse; undersized ones burst.
• For dense items like machine parts or metal goods, consider a wooden crate or a carton reinforced with edge boards.

2. Cushion inside, not just outside

• Fill every void: crumpled kraft paper, bubble wrap, or foam. Goods should not shift when you shake the box.
• Wrap each item individually if there are multiple pieces — items damaging each other is the most common packing failure.
• Heavy items at the bottom, lighter ones on top. Always.

3. Seal and strap like it will be dropped

• Use the H-taping method: seal the centre seam plus both edges, top and bottom, with wide packing tape.
• Add two plastic or polyester straps around the carton in both directions — tape fails, strapping holds.
• If the carton is over 30 kg, straps are not optional; they are how loaders will grip it.

4. Label clearly on at least two sides

• Consignor and consignee name, phone numbers, and destination city — in large, legible writing.
• "THIS SIDE UP" and "FRAGILE / HANDLE WITH CARE" markings where applicable.
• The docket/LR number once booked, so the box can be matched to its paperwork at every hub.
• Mark the weight and number of packages (e.g. "2 of 3") on each piece.

5. Photograph before handover

Take clear photos of the packed, sealed, labelled consignment — all sides. If you ever need to file a damage claim, "it left my premises in perfect condition" is only credible with timestamped evidence. Also keep the declared value realistic: FOV-based liability follows what you declared, not what you wish you had declared.

Common mistakes to avoid

• Reusing old, soft cartons from a previous shipment — they have already lost half their stacking strength.
• Marking everything "fragile" — when every box is fragile, none of them is. Reserve it for genuinely breakable goods.
• Forgetting the receiver's phone number on the label — the single biggest cause of failed last-mile delivery.
• Shipping liquids or loose granules without inner sealing — one leak ruins the whole truck's goodwill.

Good packing costs a little time and a few hundred rupees. Bad packing costs the consignment.
