What is part-load freight? A plain-English guide

If your goods weigh somewhere between a courier parcel and a full truck, you are in part-load territory. It is the least understood and most useful freight mode in India, so let us explain it in plain English.

The simple idea

A truck has a lot of space. If your consignment is only 50, 200, or 500 kg, paying for the whole truck is wasteful. In part-load (also called PTL, part truckload, or LTL — less-than-truckload), multiple shippers share one truck. Each pays for the space and weight they use; the transporter consolidates everything at a hub and fans it out at the destination.

Think of it like a shared cab for your goods: you book a seat, not the car.

When part-load is the right choice

• Your consignment is roughly 30 kg to 1,000 kg — too heavy or bulky for courier, too small for a full truck.
• You ship regularly on fixed lanes (e.g. Hyderabad to Chennai twice a week).
• Your goods can travel with other shippers' goods safely — cartons, machine parts, textiles, furniture, appliances.
• You want door pickup and door delivery without chartering a vehicle.

When it is not the right choice

• Documents or urgent small parcels under ~10 kg — a courier network is built for exactly that.
• A full truckload of goods (10+ tonnes) — chartering the whole vehicle is simpler and cheaper per kg.
• Goods that cannot be co-loaded: hazardous material, liquids without proper packing, or fragile items that cannot take stacking pressure.

How pricing usually works

Part-load is priced on chargeable weight (actual or volumetric, whichever is higher), the lane, and handling. Expect a minimum chargeable weight and a docket/booking fee on the invoice. GST on road transport typically follows the GTA structure — most small shippers see 5% without input tax credit or 12% with ITC, and under reverse charge the receiver often handles it. Always read the invoice line by line; a good provider breaks every charge out clearly.

What to look for in a part-load provider

• Upfront all-in pricing — no surprise "handling" or "destination" charges after booking.
• Milestone tracking you can check yourself, not just a phone number to call.
• Clear claims process for damage or loss, with timelines.
• Door pickup and delivery included in the quote, not added later.
